The Border is a 1982 film directed by Tony Richardson and starring Jack Nicholson as Charlie Smith, Warren Oates (in one of his final film roles) as Red and Harvey Keitel as Cat.

Plot

The movie is set in Texas. Smith takes a job as a US Border Patrol agent. Red and Cat are veteran agents already assigned to the station.

While attempting to enforce the law, Smith discovers corruption and a black market system within the force. While trying to support a free-spending wife (Valerie Perrine), he succumbs to the fringe benefits revealed to him by his fellow agent Cat. When Smith discovers the depth of what he has become involved in, he is forced to make a deadly decision.

I can't afford a f*cking dream house!

There are two things about this movie that make it a must-watch: Jack
Nicholson in one of his best performances, and the issue of
immigration.Nicholson is a border guard who tries to resist the money available but
his crazy wife (Valerie Perrine) just spends, spends, and spends like
he was a Rockefeller. He finally joins with his neighbor and partner
(Harvey Keitel) and runs some Mexicans across the border.Charlie (Nicholson) still has some morals and that causes problems for
his partner. He is also taken with Maria (Elpidia Carrillo), and that
causes problems for their Mexican contact, so he sets him up to control
him.However, he can't control Charlie, and now even the boss (Warren Oates)
is mad at him.Tony Richardson's film has a lot of elements of Sam Peckinpah. Exciting
to the end.Music by the great Ry Cooder.

An average B list film that was before it's time issue wise(illegal immigration) and it's a watch for any Jack Nicholson fan.

1982's "The Border" is clearly not a film classic and it certainly is
not one of Jack's best, yet it's far from one of his worst films also.
The theme and issue centers around illegal immigration which in 1982
this topic was being portrayed ahead of it's time, as anyone knows over
the last several years the issue is a hot button topic. Again Jack
Nicholson makes the film with his direct and straight performance.
Nicholson is Charlie Smith a guy who's left the police force to become
a border guard and in the meantime along with his gold digging and
greedy wife(Valerie Perrine)Smith again reunites with a former friend a
now ruthless guard(Harvey Keitel). Soon this is not what it appears to
be as brought to life is the drug smuggling along the Rio Grande.
Charlie must decide whether or not to cross the line as the whole
department is running in a foul manner. Overall the action, suspense,
and drama is good and Jack's performance made it a must see, as
anything with Nicholson makes people pay attention to their screens.
