Vacancy is a 2007 horror/thriller, which stars Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale. It was distributed by Screen Gems and was released to the public on April 20, 2007. Production was scheduled to commence in August 2006 with Nimród Antal signing on to direct it.
Early in the film's development, it was thought that Sarah Jessica Parker was going to be in the film. A September 2006 article in The Hollywood Reporter announced that Kate Beckinsale had signed on to replace Parker.[1]
Plot
A distraught couple, David (Luke Wilson) and Amy Fox (Kate Beckinsale) take a wrong turn on a remote mountain road and they decide to check into an isolated motel in the middle of nowhere supervised by Mason (Frank Whaley). They realize they are in a cell phone dead zone with no reception.
While in their room, a bored David takes a peek at the video tapes left on top of the television. As he watches the tapes he realizes they are snuff films, taken in the same room in which they are staying. The couple are alarmed and David runs to the motel's payphone booth only to be crashed by their own car. David escapes and runs back into the room. The couple decide to lock themselves in the room when they notice a truck pull in. They try to warn the truck's driver only to find out that he's the buyer of the snuff films and is also one of the killers.
David and Amy then escape into a tunnel that they discovered in the bathroom of their room. Two masked blue people chase them inside the tunnel but they miss them. David and Amy find themselves inside the manager's lair where they find video monitors taping the entire hotel. Amy tries to make a call to 911 but is interrupted. The couple sneak back in the tunnel, making their way into a storage room. Meanwhile the police unit from 911 arrives and David and Amy run to him as he checks the rooms. They all get inside the police car but it won't start and the killers kill the policeman. The couple run into a motel room. David hides Amy inside the ceiling as he ventures out. The killers catch David and stab him and he ends up lying at the doorway, unconscious. When morning comes, Amy finally comes down from the ceiling and finds where killers hid their car. A killer breaks into the car from the roof as Amy drives away and another killer gets pinned into the grill of the car. Amy crashes the car into a motel room killing both of the killers. Amy runs into the reception area where she is attacked by Mason who is now totally enraged. As they fight, Amy comes crashing down the floor where she picks up a gun. She shoots Mason three times killing him. Amy makes another call to 911 and caresses David, who is barely conscious but alive.
Reception
Vacancy opened at #4 in its first week at the box office grossing $7.6 million at 2,551 locations. In its second week, the film had a 45.9% drop-off, falling to a #8 position. The film has grossed a total of $28.4 million worldwide. The film received mixed reviews with Rotten Tomatoes giving the film an average rating of 55%. "Vacancy's restraint with gore is commendable", said one critic. The Rotten Tomatoes "Cream of the Crop" raters scored it a "fresh," average of 63%.[2][3]
DVD release
Vacancy was released on DVD on August 14, 2007 in both fullscreen and anamorphic widescreen, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Special features include deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, the full versions of the snuff films, and a trailer gallery. It was also released on Blu-ray Disc and UMD for the Sony PSP. Many versions shipped to Australia featured Sony DVD 'anti-piracy' technology, which led to them being unreadable on most DVD players including Sony DVD players.
Advertising and promotion
The advertising strategy for the film has made use of the Internet as well as a toll free phone number. In addition to the TV spots and trailers shown in theaters and on television, the toll free number is made to sound as if one is actually calling the motel in which the film is placed. In the background, screaming can be heard accompanying the voice of the proprietor, who informs callers about "slashing" prices and the "killer" deals that the motel has-- that is, if it is not vacant. The toll free phone number for the ad is 1-888-9-VACANCY (1-888-9-8222629).
In addition, the phone call also refers the caller to the film's website, which is also set up to be the site of the actual motel. After calling, one is given a "promotional code" (8889) which can be entered at the website,[4] which then shows previews of the snuff films that the motel proprietor and various people created, taken from the set. It was assisted and directed by Julie Tsaruhas.
Prequel
Vacancy 2: The First Cut is written by Mark L. Smith, the same writer from the first film, and directed by Eric Bross. The film stars Agnes Bruckner and Trevor Wright. The prequel focuses on the events happened before the first film, where it will show how the motel's employees started their crazy intentions.

should be a prequel but it fails somehow
Indeed, when the movie starts the credits tells us that this is a
trashgang from Midian - 23 June 2009prequel, how it all started. But somehow it fails to deliver us a
story. The first ten minutes has nothing to do with the rest of the
movie, it is just there to clock the movie in at more then a hour.
There is more blood then the original Vacancy but somehow it just don't
work. They should have made another movie with another title. And the
parts, for example, were you should jump out of your seat, well, it's
not scary. You can guess what will happen. It's a pity that they always
have to make a franchise out of movies that make a bit of money. Watch
vacancy forget this one. Watch this one, as a movie on his own and then
you will be satisfied.
Disappointing.. No wonder it went straight to video.
I was actually looking foreword to watching the movie but it was
aj_ajc_aj from United States - 17 June 2009basically the same as the first one. the boyfriend dies and the
girlfriend kills everybody. And who would survive a knife to the jaw
and being burned alive without being medically treated?? I also did not
like the fact that the movie had 3 people instead of 2.. the
African-American guys role seemed pointless. Very Disappointing.
appointing film. Don't waste your time in buying this film unless you
want to see a remake of the first one. The only difference between the
2 is that this is the first time killing people and the people try to
run away. Other than it is basically the same thing. Ill give the film
props for suspense, but they should have ran to the road not into the
forest. But like i said don't waste your time
With a bigger cast and decent producer. It could of made the big screen
After watching vacancy, it looked like a decent thriller to me just
k-dhesi from United Kingdom - 23 May 2009lacked in it's story. But vacancy 2 came back with a message. A message
that tells the story behind all you saw in the first one. Vacany 2 had
a good idea, and could of made it in theatres if it had a bigger cast.
Don't get me wrong the cast did wonderfully, but they don't have no
name, it would of made some good money too with it being in the
theatres. What made the film so good, was it's clever idea to take a step back
from the first one and answer your questions you were asking from the
first one. So yeah the plot was impressive and stronger then the first.
The actors also impressed me too, they did much better then i would of
expected, it would be more fair on them and the rest of the crew if the
film was for the big screen. If a producer was clever enough to make it
happen then it would been better. Off coarse it's not brilliant, but
it's very decent for a DTV movie. With a little more construction and a
promotion it would have definitely been up to that standard. But again it slightly lacked on thrills. The first instalment offered
more thrills and it was more creepy, vacancy 2 doesn't deliver as much.
It's more trial and error, then a planned out kill. Maybe if it just
had a tad more suspense in it. Just maybe.Overall very impressed with this second instalment. Much more then i
expected,i would strongly recommend you watch this if you seen the
first.
Sequels are never as good as the original.
Sequels are never as good as the original, however, this one i did
Rob Farrimond from United Kingdom - 26 April 2009like. I really enjoyed Vacancy as it was a sort of new style of horror
film and was like a mix between peeping tom and psycho. But the main
thing that i liked about the film is that the back story and
relationship of the couple was deep. Vacancy 2- The First Cut however,
was not as good. Don't get me wrong i enjoyed it, but the opening i
found was poor, i think it was due to the camera work, it was moved
quickly, which may have been the aim they were aiming for but it
annoyed me. I think the movie really lightened up after the couple and
their friend arrived. It became more tense when the character, Mr.
Smith walked over to the car with the 'mask' on, where the woman was
sitting, with a knife in his hand intending to add them to their snuff
film. Another part i really enjoyed was the bit when the girl, Jessica
and the friend, Tanner, run to seek help and find a house which leads
to another tense attempted- escape scene. This film doesn't really
provide many jumps, nor does the first, but the film is like no other
and i did actually like it, 18 titled in England, i'd say it should of
been a 15. Not as good as the original but i did actually really like
it.
Prequel to a solid thriller is a formula for endless copying
Prequel tale about the men who ran the motel (where they filmed the
dbborroughs from Glen Cove, New York - 31 March 2009torture and rap of the guests) in the first film and some of their
first guests at a different motel. Better than it should be, but not as
good as the first film which did what it did and knew when to get off.
The problem is that any thing special in the first film is kind of
wiped away but going too far into illogic (There are too many guests
for their plot to really work) and descending into what no doubt could
be a formula of hunt and kill. On its own its not a bad little thriller
of the crazies on the prowl genre, but at the same time other than its
setting and connection to the first film there really isn't much here,
even if it it well done. Good.certainly, watchable. but nothing thats
going to stick with you or be something you'll want to see again
(however if you ran across it on cable you might-if you like these sort
of movies)
